Summer Squash: A Friendly Handwritten Font That Lifts Your Brand

Last Tuesday, I sat at my kitchen table with three printed versions of our new candle labels—each with a different font—and sighed. We’d just launched our lavender-vanilla scent, and the label felt… off. Too stiff. Too generic. Like it belonged in a big-box store, not on a hand-poured soy candle made in my garage studio. That’s when I remembered Summer Squash: a sweet, friendly handwritten font I’d saved months ago but never tried. I installed it, typed “Lavender Vanilla,” and *immediately* smiled. It looked like something I’d write for a friend—not a corporation.

Summer Squash isn’t fussy or overly ornate. It’s warm, natural, and full of quiet personality—like ink pressed gently onto handmade paper. The lowercase letters have soft curves and subtle variation, while the capitals carry just enough presence to feel intentional, not demanding. It’s a script font, yes—but not the kind that screams “calligraphy class.” It feels lived-in, approachable, and human. That’s why it works so well for small businesses that want to signal care, craft, and connection—not cold perfection.

I started using Summer Squash across everything that touches a customer: our product labels, thank-you cards tucked into orders, Instagram story highlights, and even the chalkboard-style banner on our website homepage. It’s become the voice behind our brand—not literally, of course, but in how people *feel* when they see our name or scent names. One repeat customer told me, “Your packaging just feels like it was made *for me*.” That’s the power of typography done right.

Here’s where Summer Squash shines most: short, meaningful text. Think logo lockups, product titles (“Honey Oat Soap”), café menu headers (“Today’s Special”), boutique tags (“Handmade in Portland”), or social media quote graphics (“Slow down. Breathe. Light a candle.”). It’s a display font, not body text—so I pair it with a clean sans serif (like Montserrat or Inter) for ingredient lists, care instructions, or website paragraphs. That contrast keeps things legible and balanced: Summer Squash brings charm; the sans serif brings clarity.

For printed items—like candle jars or bakery boxes—I test readability early. On a 1.5-inch label, I keep Summer Squash at 14–16pt for scent names and avoid tight letter spacing. On mobile screens (like Instagram posts), I use it for headlines only—never long captions—and always preview in thumbnail view. It holds up beautifully on matte paper and looks lovely foil-stamped on kraft tags. Just avoid tiny sizes or low-contrast color combos (like light yellow on cream)—it’s friendly, not fuzzy.

What makes Summer Squash especially practical is how thoughtfully it’s built. It’s part of the Script Amp collection, which means it includes OpenType features like ligatures and stylistic alternates—small details that add polish without extra work. I used the “&” alternate on our holiday gift set tag, and it felt like a little wink of intentionality. It also comes in both OTF and TTF formats, supports basic Latin multilingual characters (great for小店 signs or bilingual markets), and includes full commercial licensing—so I can use it on physical products, digital templates, client work, and even resale items like printable planners.

Before choosing Summer Squash, I tried pairing other script fonts with our palette—some felt too formal, others too cartoonish. This one lands just right: relaxed but refined, personal but professional. It doesn’t shout. It invites. And that’s exactly what our customers respond to—especially in spaces where warmth matters: skincare labels, café menus, handmade jewelry tags, coaching session worksheets, or even the “Thank You” line on a receipt.

Typography isn’t about rules—it’s about resonance. When your font matches your values, your process, and your people, consistency happens naturally. With Summer Squash, our branding no longer feels pieced together. The same gentle rhythm runs through our Instagram grid, our packaging, and our email headers. Customers recognize us faster. Partners comment on how “cohesive” we look. Even I feel more confident hitting “post” or “print”—because the typeface already says what I want to say: thoughtful, handmade, and here for the right reasons.

If you’re updating your brand visuals this season—whether it’s redesigning a menu, launching new soap bars, or refreshing your Etsy shop banners—consider how much warmth a single font choice can bring. Summer Squash won’t fix your pricing strategy or shipping delays. But it *will* make your business feel more like the place people want to return to—again and again.

It’s just a font—but the right one helps your business be seen, remembered, and felt. And Summer Squash does all three, softly and sincerely.
